In Brain Connection, a formally rigorous sculpture, Christoph Broich combines an abstract genre with figural elements, achieving a remarkable balance between a learned critique of modernist conventions and a carefully calibrated, but never preachy, satirical social commentary.
Brain Connection takes the form of a steel construction either suspended from the ceiling by a rough sisal rope or free-standing in a carefully attributed space. Attached to the armature are human faces. Their mask like visage claims a certain whimsical individuality. At the same time, their specificity seems to be sacrificed to the endless rotation of the cold, rigidly geometric structure.
